CHARLESTON, West Virginia – With Thanksgiving travel fast approaching, state transportation officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for the challenges of winter driving. From Charleston to Morgantown, motorists are being urged to complete maintenance checks and stock essential supplies before colder weather and snow hit the Mountain State later this month.
According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, November is the ideal time to inspect tires, test batteries, and check wiper blades and antifreeze levels. Officials also encourage drivers to carry a winter emergency kit that includes a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction material such as sand or kitty litter.
Drivers using I-64, I-77, and I-79 should plan for long mountain grades, limited cell service in rural areas, and rapidly changing conditions between valleys and higher elevations. “Winter weather can move in quickly here — preparation before Thanksgiving makes a big difference,” a WVDOT spokesperson said. The agency also recommends keeping at least half a tank of fuel, dressing in layers, and checking routes through WV511 for real-time travel and plow updates.
Officials stress that early readiness reduces the risk of roadside emergencies and ensures safer trips during one of the state’s busiest travel periods. With Thanksgiving approaching, taking time now to winterize and pack smart will help West Virginia drivers handle whatever the season brings.
