Charleston, WV – A chilly Saturday across West Virginia will transition into a period of mixed precipitation overnight, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of the eastern mountains, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston.
The advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to noon Sunday for Pocahontas, Southeast Randolph, Southeast Fayette, and Southeast Raleigh counties. Forecasters expect a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with ice accumulations reaching a light glaze and snow amounts potentially reaching up to one inch in the higher elevations. NWS warns that roads, sidewalks, stairs, and driveways may become slick, urging drivers and pedestrians to use caution during the Sunday morning hours.
In the lowlands, precipitation may briefly begin as a wintry mix before transitioning to rain by late morning. High temperatures Sunday are expected to reach the 40s in the lowlands and 30s to mid-40s in the mountains, while overnight lows will fall into the teens and 20s across the region.
Looking ahead, Monday will be colder but mostly dry, with highs ranging from the upper 20s to mid-40s depending on elevation. However, NWS notes that another system will arrive Monday night through Tuesday, bringing the potential for additional wintry weather across parts of the state.
Residents in the advisory area are encouraged to prepare for slippery travel conditions, especially during early Sunday morning before temperatures rise.
