Birmingham, Ala. – Scattered thunderstorms will develop over western Alabama this afternoon, moving east through the evening and potentially disrupting travel across major corridors like I-20 and I-65.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, storms will intensify from areas near Hamilton and Fayette by mid-afternoon and reach eastern cities like Anniston and Gadsden by nightfall. Rain chances will taper off after midnight. Highs today will range from 85°F in Hamilton to 89°F in Tuscaloosa, with elevated humidity driving storm development.

Cities including Jasper, Birmingham, Clanton, and Alex City could see brief periods of heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, localized downpours may cause ponding on roads and reduced visibility during the evening commute.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and monitor local alerts, especially in flood-prone low-lying areas. Power outages and minor travel delays remain possible in the hardest-hit zones.

Storm chances will decrease overnight with lows dipping into the upper 60s and low 70s. Another round of storms may return this weekend.
