Abilene, TX – Strong thunderstorms could rattle parts of West Central Texas beginning Wednesday afternoon, with a higher threat for severe weather setting up Thursday across the Big Country and Concho Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, isolated to scattered storms will develop Wednesday afternoon and evening under a marginal risk, meaning a few storms could turn severe. The greatest concern Wednesday centers on eastern counties, including Brown and Coleman counties, where hail up to one inch in diameter and wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph are possible. Frequent lightning and brief heavy downpours could reduce visibility along U.S. Highway 84 and Interstate 20 near Abilene and Sweetwater.
The risk increases Thursday afternoon and evening. Forecasters have placed much of the region under a slight risk for severe storms, including Abilene, San Angelo, Sweetwater and surrounding communities. Damaging winds, large hail and even a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, especially across the Big Country.
Drivers should secure loose outdoor items, monitor local alerts and avoid flooded roadways during heavy rain. Power outages may occur where stronger storms develop.
Storm chances taper late Thursday night, but additional advisories could follow if conditions intensify.
