Spokane, Washington – Breezy winds and parched conditions are raising grass fire risks across eastern Washington through Tuesday, prompting fire safety warnings for much of the Inland Northwest.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph combined with humidity levels as low as 15% will create critical fire conditions Sunday through Tuesday. Officials warn that even small sparks could quickly spread in dry grasslands and open fields.

Areas most at risk include Spokane County, the Palouse region, and parts of northeast Washington bordering Idaho. Grassy areas along U.S. Highway 2, I-90, and state routes may become ignition points if fire control measures aren’t followed. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could create sparks — including mowing dry grass or using power tools on open land.

The danger follows several days of above-average temperatures and minimal rainfall, drying out vegetation across the region. Firefighters are on alert, and local emergency managers are asking the public to stay aware and report any smoke or suspicious activity.

Fire weather conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if wind speeds increase or humidity drops further.
