Jonesborough, TN – A Jonesborough woman is facing multiple charges after deputies say she allegedly drove drunk with a child in her vehicle early Tuesday morning.
According to Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton, deputies arrested April Garland, 39, shortly after midnight on Sept. 10 in the 100 block of New Salem Road. Garland is charged with child endangerment, driving under the influence, possession of a handgun while under the influence, and violating the open container law.
Deputies were called after a witness reported a young child approached a residence asking for directions before returning to a vehicle. The witness advised the driver to park the car, but the driver, later identified as Garland, allegedly drove to the end of a cul-de-sac and stopped. The witness then called 911.
When deputies arrived, they found Garland lying in the front seat with the child. Authorities say she admitted to drinking. A search revealed a handgun in the driver’s side door compartment and two open beer containers on the passenger floorboard.
A family member was contacted to pick up the child. Garland was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
