Salt Lake City, UT – Residents across Utah should prepare for strong winds and accumulating snow as a cold front moves through the state Monday into Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Salt Lake City, wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected across the Great Salt Lake Desert, West Desert, and parts of west-central and southwest Utah. These winds will develop Monday morning and persist into the late evening, with gusty conditions beginning as early as Sunday night in the Tooele and Rush Valleys. Motorists, especially those traveling on I-80, should be prepared for strong crosswinds, which could make travel hazardous for high-profile vehicles, RVs, and trailers. Power outages are also possible, and residents are urged to secure outdoor objects.

Following the winds, a cold front will bring accumulating snow Monday evening through Tuesday. NWS forecasts light valley snowfall along the Wasatch Front, with 1 to 3 inches expected in lower elevations and up to 6 inches for benches and the Tooele area. The I-15 corridor and Wasatch Back could see 2 to 5 inches, while mountain areas, including Brian Head and the Upper Cottonwoods, may receive up to 18 inches. Snowfall could impact the Tuesday morning commute.

Drivers should anticipate winter conditions and check road status before traveling. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises carrying a winter survival kit and preparing for possible traction restrictions in mountain regions.
