Marquette, Mich. – Boaters on Lake Superior should brace for dangerous conditions Tuesday morning as dense fog continues to blanket much of Michigan’s northern shoreline, with visibility dropping to less than one nautical mile in several areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect until 8 a.m. EDT for waters from Ontonagon to Whitefish Point and Isle Royale National Park. An extended advisory through 11 a.m. covers offshore zones from the Portage Canal to Grand Marais.
Visibility concerns are just the start. A Small Craft Advisory takes effect at 1 p.m. Tuesday for waters from Eagle River to Manitou Island, where gusts could reach 25 knots and waves may build up to 4 feet.
The fog and wind combo could pose significant hazards for less-experienced mariners. Navigators are urged to use radar and fog signals, ensure all navigation lights are active, and avoid travel if not essential.
These conditions are typical in early summer as warmer air meets the cold waters of Lake Superior. Additional advisories may follow later this week if patterns persist.
