Indian Trail, NC – A fatal structure fire remains under investigation after firefighters discovered the body of an individual inside a home early Wednesday morning in Union County. The Stallings Fire Department and Union County Sheriff’s Office responded shortly after receiving reports of a structure fire in the 5200 block of Shortcut Lane in Indian Trail.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, crews arrived to find a small but active fire concentrated in the kitchen area of the residence. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and, while searching the home, located the deceased individual in the same area where the fire is believed to have originated.

Investigators from the Union County Fire Marshal’s Office, Sheriff’s detectives, and Crime Scene Investigators are working jointly to determine the exact cause of the fire. Early findings indicate the blaze appears to be accidental, and officials say there is currently no evidence of foul play.

Authorities have not released the identity of the decedent. An autopsy will be conducted to confirm identification and determine the official cause of death.

The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains active as fire officials continue examining the kitchen area and gathering information to understand how the blaze began.

Residents in the area are encouraged to remain aware of emergency activity but assured that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Additional information will be released once next of kin are notified and the medical examiner completes the autopsy.
