Amarillo, Texas – Large hail and damaging winds are likely to slam Amarillo by early Sunday afternoon, with a tornado still possible through nightfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a 50% chance of severe thunderstorms begins after 1 p.m. Sunday, especially over the northeastern combined Panhandles, including Potter and Randall counties. Localized flash flooding is possible, and tornado conditions remain favorable through 6 p.m. Anyone in low-lying or flood-prone areas should prepare now by securing outdoor items and avoiding unnecessary travel.

High temperatures on Sunday will climb to 89°F, but do not let the sunny start fool you. Thunderstorm activity ramps up fast, with storm cells strengthening after noon. Drivers along Interstate 40 should expect rapid weather changes, reduced visibility, and gusty crosswinds into Sunday night.

By Monday, conditions slightly ease but remain unstable. A 30% chance of storms returns after 1 p.m., with highs near 78°F and more isolated showers continuing into Monday night. Each evening through Tuesday night carries at least a 30% to 40% chance of thunderstorms, some of which may become strong again by Tuesday afternoon.
