Kerrville, Texas – Catastrophic flash flooding in Central Texas has killed at least 59 people, including 21 children, as rescue teams continue to search for 11 children still unaccounted for from Camp Mystic, a summer camp along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County.

According to Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha, the floodwaters surged rapidly through the Hill Country on Friday, overwhelming roads and submerging entire communities. More than 160 air rescues have been conducted, and 850 people have been pulled to safety statewide. The U.S. Coast Guard was credited with saving 223 individuals near Kerrville, officials said.

The flooding struck while nearly 750 children were attending Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas. At least 27 campers were initially reported missing, and as of Sunday morning, 11 girls remain unaccounted for. Officials say some may be unreachable due to communication outages, but families are still anxiously awaiting updates.

In Burnet County, two deaths and six missing persons have been confirmed. In Tom Green County, a 62-year-old woman died when her car was swept away. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has requested expanded federal disaster assistance.

Kerr County officials will hold a 10 a.m. news conference Sunday to update the public on rescue efforts.
