Sumter, SC – A violent incident in Sumter County ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting Wednesday evening after a man allegedly stabbed a woman, stole her car, and led deputies on a multi-county pursuit.
According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 6:10 p.m. when deputies responded to a 911 call from a woman in the Wendermere subdivision. The victim had been stabbed multiple times. She told authorities that Wendell Samuel Chisolm, the alleged offender, stole her vehicle and firearm before fleeing.
Deputies quickly located the vehicle, but when they attempted a traffic stop, Chisolm allegedly refused to stop. The pursuit stretched through portions of Sumter, Lee, and Kershaw Counties. During the chase, the suspect allegedly fired several rounds at deputies. At least one deputy returned fire.
The pursuit ended when Chisolm’s vehicle was forced off the road into a ditch. As deputies approached, they reported hearing another gunshot and found that Chisolm had suffered a self-inflicted wound. He was transported to the hospital but later pronounced dead.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and Highway Patrol are assisting in the investigation. Sheriff Anthony Dennis praised deputies for preventing what he described as a potentially much worse outcome. “The actions of Wendell Chisolm not only caused serious injuries to a Sumter County resident but also put many citizens and law enforcement officers’ lives at risk,” Dennis said.
