MISSOURI — A sharp cold front is preparing to sweep through eastern Missouri and west-central Illinois by Wednesday afternoon, bringing a 40% chance of light snowfall and a noticeable chill across the region.
Residents in St. Louis, Hannibal, and Quincy should prepare for quick changes in conditions as the front pushes through. The National Weather Service in St. Louis says a dusting of snow is possible Wednesday afternoon into early evening, mainly north of Interstate 70. While snowfall totals are expected to stay light, the timing could coincide with the evening commute, creating slick roadways and reduced visibility on bridges and overpasses.
Behind the front, temperatures will drop rapidly into the 20s by Wednesday night, ushering in a colder, breezy stretch through the end of the week. Winds shifting northwest at 10 to 20 mph will drive wind chills into the teens, especially north of the metro area. Drivers and pedestrians should watch for refreezing moisture late Wednesday and early Thursday.
Meteorologists stress that confidence in snow coverage remains moderate — the band could shift slightly north or south depending on the final path of the cold front. Even a light coating, however, can make untreated surfaces slippery.
