According to the National Weather Service, the equinox happened at 4:01 AM CDT on March 20, 2024. This astronomical event occurs when the sun crosses the equator, creating nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness across the globe.
For the Northern Hemisphere, this signals the start of spring, bringing warmer temperatures, blooming flowers, and longer daylight hours. Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere enters autumn as their days begin to shorten.
The increasing daylight will continue until the summer solstice in June, when the Northern Hemisphere experiences its longest day of the year.
