Sioux Falls, SD – A stretch of hot, windy weather will raise fire danger across the northern Plains this weekend, with gusts topping 40 mph and highs pushing into the 90s. The combination of unseasonably warm temperatures and strong southerly winds could bring elevated fire concerns across northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, central South Dakota, and nearby counties through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls office, winds will strengthen Friday afternoon with gusts of 30 to 40 mph likely by Saturday. Even though recent rainfall has lowered the immediate fire threat, dry grasses remain in place across many fields and rights-of-way. Officials warn that any sparks could spread quickly, especially where combines and farm equipment are active during harvest.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety urged residents to use extreme caution with outdoor burning, machinery, and smoking materials. Drivers along I-29, I-90, and rural county roads may encounter reduced visibility from dust or smoke in windy areas. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary burning, and keep cell phones charged in case of fire warnings.

Forecasters added that isolated thunderstorms are possible late Saturday into Sunday for central South Dakota. While rainfall would help lower the fire threat, stronger storms could still produce brief gusty winds. Outdoor activities and high school football games should proceed with caution given the windy setup.

Cooler air is expected to arrive by early next week, with highs falling into the 60s and lows in the 40s, bringing a more seasonable October feel.
