Frederick, MD – A broad portion of the Mid-Atlantic is experiencing slick roads this morning as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of Maryland, Virginia, and eastern West Virginia. Mixed precipitation—snow, sleet, and pockets of freezing rain—is expected to continue through late morning and early afternoon, affecting many communities along the I-70, I-81, and US-340 corridors.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Baltimore/Washington, most areas will see up to one inch of snow and sleet, along with a light glaze of ice, while higher elevations west of the Allegheny Front may pick up up to one-tenth of an inch of ice. Additional upslope snow showers could add a coating to an inch in western Maryland and eastern West Virginia later today.
Communities under the advisory include Hagerstown, Frederick, Westminster, northern Baltimore County, Morgantown’s nearby counties, Martinsburg, Charles Town, Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Luray, Warrenton, Culpeper, and areas along the Virginia Blue Ridge.
The hazardous conditions have already impacted the Tuesday morning commute, with several reports of slick bridges, untreated secondary roads, and reduced visibility in pockets of heavier mixed precipitation. Temperatures are expected to climb gradually through late morning, allowing the wintry mix to transition to plain rain in areas such as northwest Montgomery and northwest Howard Counties by around 10 a.m.
NWS officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for black ice, especially in shaded stretches, rural roads, and higher terrain. Travel difficulties may persist into early afternoon for communities where freezing temperatures linger.
Residents can check local 511 systems for updated travel conditions in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
