Fair Haven, VT – A routine traffic stop Tuesday night on Washington Street in Fair Haven led to the arrest of a 31-year-old man who deputies say was allegedly violating multiple court-ordered conditions of release.

According to the Rutland County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Tuesday at approximately 8:56 p.m. while deputies assigned to the Vermont State Office of Highway Safety were conducting traffic enforcement near Maplefield’s. A vehicle was observed traveling above the posted speed limit, prompting a traffic stop.

Deputies identified the driver as Fletcher O. Johnston, 31. A records check revealed Johnston was under two active sets of court-ordered conditions of release for prior cases, authorities said. Deputies determined Johnston was not permitted to operate a motor vehicle and was also prohibited from buying, possessing, or consuming alcohol.

Investigators said observations made outside the vehicle provided indicators of additional criminal activity in plain view. As a result, Johnston’s vehicle was seized for evidentiary purposes and a search warrant was later applied for and granted.

Johnston was taken into custody and transported to the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department for processing. He was later lodged at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility, where he was held on bail.

According to the sheriff’s office, Johnston is scheduled to appear in Rutland Superior Court, Criminal Division, on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. to answer to two counts of violation of conditions of release under Title 13 VSA §7559.

Deputies also issued traffic tickets related to the stop, including operating without insurance. Authorities noted the investigation remains active, and additional charges are anticipated pending the results of the vehicle search.

Residents in the Fair Haven area are encouraged to report unsafe driving or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
