Williamsport, Pa. – Repeated rounds of heavy rain overnight could cause flash flooding across central Pennsylvania, with the greatest risk in low-lying and flood-prone areas through 8 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Flood Watch remains in effect for 13 counties, including Columbia, Lycoming, Union, and Northumberland. Thunderstorms are expected to produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with localized totals potentially topping 3 inches.
The most vulnerable areas include creeks, streams, and roads near steep terrain or poor drainage. Communities along the West Branch Susquehanna River, including Williamsport, Lock Haven, and Sunbury, should remain alert for rapidly rising water. Flash flooding could also impact routes like PA-405 and US-15 during the morning commute.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, keep cell phones charged, and stay updated in case Flash Flood Warnings are issued overnight. Schools and businesses may face delays depending on overnight rain totals and road conditions.
The Flood Watch is set to expire at 8 a.m., but additional alerts could be issued if storms persist or intensify.
