Charleston, W.Va. – Heavy rain is drenching parts of West Virginia and southeast Ohio Sunday night, prompting a Flood Watch that remains in effect through Monday evening and could extend into Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, repeated rounds of thunderstorms may lead to localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and urban zones. Areas under the watch include Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, Morgantown, and southern Ohio cities like Portsmouth and Athens.

Storms are expected to continue into Monday and Tuesday, with mountain temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 80s and lowlands reaching into the upper 80s. Overnight lows will hover in the 60s, offering little relief from saturated conditions. Flood-prone roadways, small creeks, and underpasses may be especially hazardous.

Residents are urged to avoid travel during heavy rain, monitor alerts via NOAA Weather Radio or mobile apps, and remember: Turn around, don’t drown if encountering flooded roads. Power outages and brief travel disruptions are also possible as storms continue.

The threat of storms lingers into late week, with more widespread showers expected Wednesday and Thursday.
