Ohio – The cold bites hard across central Ohio, turning parked cars brittle and sidewalks painfully unforgiving. Frost clings to metal surfaces, and even calm air feels sharp against exposed skin as dangerous winter conditions settle in.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through late morning, followed by a Cold Weather Advisory lasting into early Sunday. Wind chills across Columbus and surrounding counties dip as low as 25 below zero at times, cold enough to cause frostbite within minutes.
Temperatures hover below zero early, with light winds offering little relief. Even brief trips outside demand layers, gloves, and face coverings. Roads remain mostly dry, but flash freezing remains a concern anywhere moisture lingers, especially on bridges and ramps along I-70, I-71, and I-270.
Sunshine helps later, but it does little to warm the air. Highs today struggle into the teens, while wind chills stay dangerously low. By Sunday, conditions improve slightly. Highs reach near 20, though morning wind chills still hover near zero.
Light snow chances return early next week. A weak system Monday may bring spotty snow, followed by another chance Tuesday. Accumulations appear light, but even minor snowfall could quickly turn slick due to cold pavement. Plan extra time for commutes and watch shaded roads closely.
Looking ahead, February begins colder than normal across the Midwest. The Great Lakes are nearly half frozen, reinforcing cold air into Ohio. Temperatures remain below average through midweek, with gradual moderation possible late in the week.
Residents should limit time outdoors, protect pets and pipes, and check on neighbors. Traveling today or tonight? Share what conditions look like where you are.
