Grand Forks, N.D. – Isolated severe thunderstorms could sweep through eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota Saturday afternoon, bringing 60 mph wind gusts and pockets of hail up to 1 inch in diameter.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a cold front will arrive mid-afternoon Saturday, triggering thunderstorms between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. While widespread severe weather is not expected, localized storms could pack damaging winds. Tornadoes are unlikely, but the main hazard remains high wind and scattered hail.
Communities from Grand Forks to Valley City and extending into Crookston and Thief River Falls may be affected. Motorists should secure loose items and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially on U.S. Highway 2 and I-29. Outdoor events may face brief disruptions due to gusty winds or lightning. Residents are advised to monitor alerts and shelter indoors if warnings are issued.
This is the first round of severe weather activity tied to an incoming cold front expected to linger through the weekend. More storm chances may develop in its wake.
