Grand Forks County, ND – A 76-year-old man from Grand Forks was killed late Saturday after his SUV was struck by a train east of the city, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. on October 4, 2025, in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue NE, roughly three miles west of Grand Forks. Investigators said a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox became high-centered on the railroad tracks facing south near the intersection of 16th Street NE and 17th Avenue NE.

According to authorities, an eastbound BNSF train collided with the SUV, dragging it approximately 60 feet before coming to a stop. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries. Airbags deployed during the crash.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said road conditions were good and the weather was clear and dark at the time of the collision. The Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office, Grand Forks Fire Department, and Altru Ambulance also responded to the scene.
