Wilmington, North Carolina – Drivers and residents across southeastern North Carolina should brace for a messy Thursday as heavy rain and thunderstorms move through the region. The National Weather Service is calling for a 90% chance of precipitation, with rainfall totals in Wilmington and surrounding areas expected to range between 1 and 2 inches.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will begin after 8 a.m. Thursday and continue through Thursday night. Winds could gust up to 17 mph, especially along U.S. Route 17 and major corridors in New Hanover and Brunswick counties. Lightning and localized flooding are possible in low-lying areas, especially near the Cape Fear River.

Thursday night remains stormy with lingering showers and isolated thunderstorms. Rain chances remain high (80%), and road conditions could worsen during the evening commute. Motorists should avoid flooded roads, slow down in heavy rain, and allow extra travel time.

Showers taper off by Friday, though pop-up thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon. Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s, and conditions remain humid through the weekend.

Looking ahead, Saturday brings another round of afternoon storms, followed by a stormy Sunday with rain chances climbing to 60%. Temperatures stay in the high 80s into early next week, with more thunderstorms likely Monday and Tuesday.
