Albany, NY – Storms are brewing across eastern New York, with a surge of heat and scattered thunderstorms expected to arrive in Albany by late Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will begin after 5 p.m. Thursday, with highs nearing 89°F. The sudden shift from Wednesday’s dry, sunny skies could impact evening commutes on I-87, I-90, and I-787. Rain amounts will vary, but localized downpours may cause ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during peak traffic hours.

Storms may continue into Thursday night, with isolated thunder rumbling before midnight. Although rainfall totals are expected to remain under a quarter inch, heavier bands could cause flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Drivers should remain alert for slick roads and sudden gusts.

By Friday, the threat grows. Showers and thunderstorms become likely after 2 p.m., with a 60% chance of rain and highs near 84°F. The pattern persists into Friday night and through Saturday, when another round of rain is possible.

Weekend plans should include rain backup options. Saturday brings a 40% chance of showers, mostly before noon. While Sunday looks partly sunny and warm, rain chances return by Monday night.
