Albany, N.Y. – Damaging winds and large hail could sweep across eastern New York and western New England Thursday afternoon as isolated severe thunderstorms develop along a passing cold front.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, storms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday across the Capital Region, Berkshires, eastern Catskills, and parts of Vermont and western Massachusetts. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather has been issued.
Storms could produce wind gusts topping 58 mph and hail at least an inch in diameter. Localized downpours and lightning may accompany stronger cells, and brief flooding is possible in poorly drained areas. Power outages and downed tree limbs could impact evening commutes on major routes like I-87, Route 7, and the Mass Pike.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor local alerts. If thunder roars, head indoors—lightning will be a threat even outside the heaviest rainfall.
Severe weather chances taper Thursday night, but another update from the NWS is expected by 6 a.m. Friday.
