Binghamton, N.Y. – Heavy rain across Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania could trigger flash flooding through Tuesday morning, with creeks and low-lying areas at risk from runoff overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday for 18 counties including Onondaga, Broome, Tioga, Steuben, and Luzerne. Rainfall totals could overwhelm storm drains and small waterways, especially in urban areas like Syracuse, Binghamton, Elmira, and Scranton.
Residents along the Chemung River and tributaries in Tompkins, Schuyler, and Yates counties are urged to remain alert. Localized flooding is possible along Route 17, I-81, and rural roads near Sayre and Montrose, where saturated ground increases runoff risks.
Emergency officials recommend avoiding flooded roadways, charging phones, and preparing for potential evacuations in flood-prone zones. This system is tapping into tropical moisture and may resemble similar June flooding events seen in 2021 and 2013.
Conditions are expected to improve by late Tuesday morning, but additional warnings may be issued overnight if rainfall intensifies.
