Raton, NM – A winter weather advisory is in effect for Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, including Raton Pass, starting Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) announced the advisory will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday and remain active until 5 a.m. Sunday. Up to 3 inches of snow is expected to accumulate during this time.
According to the NWS, the affected areas include sections of I-25 through Raton Pass and US Highways 64 and 87 near Capulin and Des Moines. Road conditions are likely to become snow-packed and icy, making travel hazardous.
Motorists planning to drive through the region should proceed with caution, reduce speeds, and allow for extra travel time. Authorities recommend checking updated road conditions through New Mexico’s 511 service or by visiting NMroads.com.
The snowstorm is expected to peak in intensity during the late evening hours, with freezing temperatures contributing to slippery road surfaces. While accumulations are moderate, officials warn that even light snowfall can create dangerous travel conditions, especially in mountainous terrain.
Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for potential delays and monitor the latest weather updates throughout the night. Emergency services suggest carrying an emergency kit, including blankets, flashlights, and food, when traveling in winter conditions.
As the storm moves through, it will likely clear by early Sunday, leaving frigid temperatures but calmer skies in its wake.
