Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico residents are bracing for dangerously cold weather as a cold weather advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday. Wind chills across central and northern New Mexico could dip as low as 10 degrees below zero, posing serious risks for those outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers central, north-central, and northwest regions of the state, including the Albuquerque metro area. Officials are urging residents to wear layers, hats, and gloves if venturing outside. The extreme cold increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, especially during early morning hours.

Temperatures will remain below freezing through the night before gradually warming. Today’s high will reach 47°F with sunny skies, but overnight lows will plummet to 14°F. Thursday will bring more sun but remain chilly, with a high near 39°F and light winds from the north.

Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday will see slightly warmer conditions, with highs reaching the mid-40s. However, overnight lows will hover around 20°F. By Sunday, temperatures may climb into the low 50s, though a slight chance of rain and snow showers is expected by evening.

Drivers should take precautions, particularly during the coldest periods of the morning. Key roadways such as I-40 and I-25 may experience icy patches due to lingering frost.

Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, especially older adults and those without adequate heating. Use portable heaters safely and avoid using grills or generators indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
