St. Louis, Missouri – Tornado activity across the St. Louis region has already doubled the annual average for 2025, with 43 confirmed tornadoes reported so far this year—surpassing the typical total of 21.5 and we’re only in June.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a startling 28% of these storms have reached strong to violent levels (EF-2 or higher), with wind speeds exceeding 111 mph. The breakdown includes three EF-3 tornadoes, eight EF-2s, and a combined 30 weaker or unrated events. Officials say the unusually active season has made 2025 one of the most volatile years in recent memory for the region.
Tornadoes have impacted multiple counties including St. Charles, Jefferson, and parts of Franklin, damaging homes, toppling trees, and disrupting power. Interstate 44 and several rural roadways have seen closures due to storm debris and emergency response activity. Emergency management agencies urge residents to have a shelter plan in place and sign up for weather alerts as the peak of severe season continues.
With three more months of high-risk conditions ahead, the National Weather Service warns that more tornadoes are likely. Stay weather-aware and watch for additional warnings as storms continue to track across the central U.S.
