Macon, Mississippi – The Noxubee River at Macon is cresting at 32.6 feet early Wednesday, submerging nearby low-lying areas and prompting an extended flood warning through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, minor flooding continues with water surrounding the sewage lagoon west of Macon, though the access road remains open. Flood stage is 28 feet, and the river is expected to remain above that threshold until early Friday morning before slowly receding to 18.6 feet by Sunday night.

Residents near the river are urged to avoid flooded areas, especially overnight when hazards are harder to see. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical advice, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. The NWS warns drivers to use alternate routes and avoid low-lying roads that could become impassable.

While the current flooding is classified as minor, residents should remain alert for changing conditions. This is the second rise in the Noxubee in as many weeks, indicating saturated ground and increased runoff risks with any new rainfall.

The next official update is due at 2:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday. Additional warnings may follow if conditions worsen.
