Chicago, IL – A powerful winter storm is set to impact the Midwest this weekend, bringing up to a foot of snow to parts of Illinois and Indiana. The storm is expected to begin Friday evening and intensify through Sunday, creating hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall is predicted along and north of Interstate 80, with areas near the Illinois-Wisconsin border and northern Indiana potentially seeing over 12 inches of accumulation. Central Illinois and Indiana could receive 6 to 10 inches, with blowing snow reducing visibility and complicating travel.
Residents are urged to prepare for challenging road conditions and delays. Drivers on major routes, including I-80, I-55, and I-65, should expect reduced visibility, icy roads, and possible closures. Authorities recommend postponing non-essential travel and equipping vehicles with emergency supplies, such as blankets, water, and a phone charger.
Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible at the storm’s peak Saturday evening. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph will likely lead to drifting snow, further hampering road clearing efforts. Power outages may also occur due to the weight of snow on power lines.
The storm is expected to taper off by late Sunday, but bitterly cold temperatures will follow, with highs in the teens and lows near zero early next week.
