Ash Township, MI – A Carleton woman was killed Monday evening in a two-vehicle crash involving a flatbed truck on N. Telegraph Road in Ash Township.
According to a release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 5:08 p.m. Monday in the 13000 block of N. Telegraph Road, just north of Carleton Rockwood Road. Investigators said 65-year-old Craig S. Chinavare of Carleton was driving a red 2012 International 4000 flatbed truck northbound when he came to a complete stop with his left turn signal activated, attempting to enter a private driveway.
Authorities said that as the truck was waiting to turn, it was allegedly struck from behind by a 2012 Ford Escape driven by Jessica E. Benner, age 30, also of Carleton. The impact caused Benner’s vehicle to rotate off the road and come to rest on the shoulder, while Chinavare’s truck rolled into a driveway across the road.
Benner was pronounced dead at the scene. Chinavare was not injured and was released following the incident. Investigators confirmed that Chinavare was wearing his seatbelt, but Benner was not. Airbags in Benner’s vehicle did deploy during the collision.
Alcohol and excessive speed were not believed to be factors in the crash, according to deputies.
The incident remains under investigation by Lieutenant Brian Quinn and deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities at 734-240-7541.
Emergency response teams from the Ash Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Program assisted at the scene.
