Marquette, Michigan – Storm chances are rising across Upper Michigan as the region enters the heart of the holiday travel week, with thunderstorms possible as early as Wednesday and a more impactful round expected Friday, July 4th.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, isolated thunderstorms are expected across parts of western and central Upper Michigan on Wednesday, especially in the afternoon. More widespread storm activity could hit Friday afternoon into the evening, posing a threat to outdoor Independence Day celebrations. The risk will be highest for areas along US-41, a major holiday route.

Wednesday’s storms carry only a 20% chance in the afternoon, but by Friday, precipitation chances climb to 40%, with a stronger potential for both showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Storms could linger into the weekend, with showers possible Saturday and Sunday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

Residents planning to attend outdoor events or fireworks displays in cities like Marquette, Houghton, and Escanaba should monitor local updates and consider backup plans. Charge devices in advance, avoid open fields during lightning activity, and secure outdoor equipment if storms approach.

Thunderstorm timing remains key, and more updates are expected from the National Weather Service as conditions develop.
