Caribou, Maine – A surge of hot, unstable air ahead of a cold front will drive temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s across central and northern Maine Thursday, setting the stage for potentially severe thunderstorms by afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) is in place for most of the state on Thursday, June 5. The cold front sweeping through the region could trigger isolated severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail. Storms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. and may continue into the evening.

Cities such as Caribou (85°F), Millinocket (89°F), and Dover-Foxcroft (92°F) are in the bullseye for both heat and storm activity. The risk extends to Bangor, Greenville, and Houlton, where outdoor plans may be disrupted by lightning and downpours. Travel on Routes 1 and 95 could be affected during the afternoon commute.

Residents are urged to monitor alerts and seek shelter if storms develop. “When thunder roars, go indoors” remains key advice. Avoid metal structures, unplug electronics, and wait 30 minutes after thunder before resuming outdoor activity.

This pattern could repeat into the weekend with temperatures staying warm. Additional updates and advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
