Lake County, IN: Train-Pedestrian Accident Claims Life of Local Resident

Hammond, IN – A 72-year-old Hammond man was killed in a train-pedestrian accident Wednesday at the railroad crossing near Sohl and Willow Ct.

Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Jesus Gamez, a resident of the 5200 block of State Line Ave. According to the Coroner, Gamez was struck around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, and his death was pronounced at 5:13 p.m. after suffering multiple blunt force injuries.

A forensic autopsy, completed Thursday at the Lake County Forensic Center in Crown Point, confirmed the cause of death as traumatic injuries caused by the collision. Hammond Police Department, Indiana Harbor Belt Police, and Hammond EMA responded to the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has ruled the manner of death as an accident. The investigation remains ongoing.
