Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers and residents across Iowa should brace for severe thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Monday, with large hail and gusty winds likely to impact travel, utilities, and evening plans. Northern and western parts of the state face the greatest risk, with isolated tornadoes also possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather covers northern and western Iowa, including Fort Dodge, Mason City, and Sioux City. Much of central and southern Iowa—including Des Moines, Ames, and Ottumwa—remains under a Marginal Risk for storms. The strongest activity is expected late Monday afternoon into the evening hours.

Primary hazards include damaging wind gusts over 50 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter. While the overall tornado threat remains low, a few could develop in the northern counties. Heavy downpours may also lead to ponding on roads and isolated flash flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during storms, avoid outdoor plans, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Keep devices charged and shelter ready if severe warnings are issued.

Storm activity may linger into the late evening, and further updates are expected as conditions evolve. Watches or warnings may be issued throughout the day Monday.
