Eastern Iowa – Thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecasted to return to eastern Iowa on Monday, following record-breaking rainfall in Dubuque on Sunday. Local residents are advised to prepare for hazardous travel conditions, particularly in areas prone to flooding. Officials warn that Tuesday’s storms could impact visibility and make roads slick, increasing the risk of accidents.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Dubuque recorded 2.26 inches of rain on Sunday, breaking its previous single-day record of 2.17 inches set in 2003. With additional rain on the way, flood-prone roads, especially those near rivers or low-lying areas, may be at risk of pooling water. Commuters and travelers should monitor weather updates and exercise caution when navigating potentially wet or flooded roads on Tuesday.

The NWS forecast indicates a 90% chance of precipitation on Monday, with storms likely in the morning and again in the afternoon. Winds are expected to reach up to 25 mph, creating additional challenges for drivers and those traveling on highways. Rainfall amounts could vary, with higher totals possible in thunderstorms, contributing to local flooding concerns.

Looking ahead, the extended forecast shows a break in the rain by Tuesday, with sunny and clear skies predicted for the rest of the week. Daytime highs are expected to reach the upper 50s, providing a welcome reprieve from the wet start of the week. Nights will remain cool, with temperatures dropping into the high 30s, so residents should prepare for colder evenings.

For those in eastern Iowa, especially Dubuque, staying informed on weather updates through local news channels and the NWS will be essential as Tuesday’s storms approach.
