Champaign, Illinois – Strong thunderstorms could roll into Champaign by 4 p.m. Sunday, bringing large hail, damaging winds, and lightning across central Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the main threats will arrive late Sunday afternoon into the evening as a cold front moves through the region. Counties including Champaign, Vermilion, and McLean are under heightened risk for severe weather. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel Sunday night, especially along I-74 where visibility and road conditions may deteriorate quickly.

Sunday’s high will near 81°F under mostly sunny skies, but storm chances increase rapidly after 4 p.m. A few thunderstorms could become severe. Rain and gusts up to 30 mph may continue through Sunday night, with localized downpours producing between a half to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall.

On Monday, summer weather returns briefly, with highs near 78°F and sunny skies. Dry, mild conditions hold through midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to stay clear with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, making for ideal early summer conditions.
