Orlando, Fla. – Dangerous heat and scattered storms are bearing down on East Central Florida today, with heat indices climbing as high as 104° and a 50% chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms in several inland cities.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, highs will range from 90° near the coast to 96° inland, with the most intense heat expected in Sanford, Orlando, and Leesburg. A Heat Advisory has not been issued yet, but UV levels remain extreme, prompting officials to urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, hydrate regularly, and reapply sunscreen frequently.
Inland areas like Kissimmee and Okeechobee face both high heat and the greatest storm chances, while coastal cities such as Vero Beach and Daytona Beach will see slightly lower highs in the low 90s with a 40% chance of rain. The risk of lightning storms is highest between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., especially during peak beach and commute hours.
Residents should avoid strenuous activities outdoors, especially during the late afternoon. Lightning safety remains a top concern: when thunder roars, go indoors.
Scattered storms and dangerous heat will continue through Friday, with daily highs in the mid-90s and persistent lightning risks throughout the week.
