Chicago, IL – A strong Arctic front will send temperatures plunging across the Midwest and South, beginning Friday, January 19. Sub-zero wind chills and hazardous cold will stretch from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, threatening public safety.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop well below normal across Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky through January 23. Northern areas, including Wisconsin and Michigan, will experience sub-zero lows, while Missouri and Tennessee will see well-below freezing temperatures. Parts of the region may also encounter dangerous wind chills, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
The cold snap will intensify during the weekend and early next week. Cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis could see daytime highs near zero, with wind chills plummeting to -20°F or lower. Farther south, areas including Nashville and St. Louis will see overnight lows in the teens.
Residents are urged to prepare for extreme cold and potential disruptions. Forecasters suggest insulating pipes, ensuring access to heating sources, and avoiding extended exposure to the cold. Travel may become difficult due to icy conditions in some areas.
The Arctic air is forecasted to moderate slightly midweek, but additional cold snaps remain possible through the end of January. For updates, visit NOAA.gov.
