Springfield, MO – Drivers in northern and central Missouri should prepare for hazardous travel conditions as snowfall blankets the region. A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of the I-70 corridor, with 3-5 inches of snow expected today. Impacts are expected to peak between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snow will affect areas near Columbia, Jefferson City, and east toward St. Louis. The advisory warns of reduced visibility and slippery roadways, particularly during afternoon travel. Drivers are urged to allow extra time and check Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) updates before heading out.
Road conditions are expected to worsen in zones with “moderate impacts,” as highlighted on the NWS travel map. Motorists are advised to reduce speed and maintain extra distance between vehicles. Those traveling long distances on I-70 should plan for potential delays, with minor disruptions also extending south toward Springfield.
Looking ahead, Sunday will bring a reprieve from snow, with partly cloudy skies and highs near 40°F. However, freezing overnight temperatures could refreeze untreated surfaces, posing additional challenges for early commuters Monday morning.
The week ahead looks quieter, with mostly dry conditions through Wednesday before another chance of rain or snow develops late in the week.
