Snow is tapering off across central Indiana this morning, but travel conditions remain hazardous as snow-covered roads persist through the early commute. Drivers from Indianapolis to Anderson, Greenwood, and Plainfield should plan for slow-going traffic, lingering slick spots, and active snow plows working to clear main routes before sunrise.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis warns that even as flakes stop falling, packed snow and slush may continue to cause traction issues, especially on untreated or less-traveled roads. Temperatures near freezing will limit melting until later this afternoon, keeping I-65, I-70, and side streets coated with a light layer of snow.

Motorists are urged to reduce speed, allow extra following distance, and avoid sudden stops or lane changes. “Snow may be ending, but roads will remain slick through the morning commute,” forecasters said, adding that snowplow crews will remain active for several hours clearing bridges and overpasses.

By midday, skies will begin to clear across the metro area, with temperatures rising slowly into the upper 30s. That should help improve road conditions, though shaded areas could remain icy into the afternoon. Winds stay light out of the northwest, adding a chill but not reducing visibility.

Looking ahead, a brief break in the weather arrives this afternoon before another weak system could bring flurries or light snow showers Wednesday night. Temperatures stay cold through midweek, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.

If you must travel early, give plows room to work and allow extra time. A few extra minutes of caution could prevent spinouts on snow-packed stretches this early-December morning across Indiana.
