Champaign, IL – Central Illinois residents can expect a significant shift in weather this week, with rain Monday leading into snow by midweek. Drivers on major roadways like I-74 and I-57 should prepare for slick conditions and reduced visibility starting Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service, Monday will begin with highs near 62°F and scattered showers, with rainfall increasing in the afternoon. Strong gusts up to 25 mph could make driving hazardous. Rain will continue through Monday night, with temperatures dipping to 57°F.
Tuesday offers a brief reprieve, with sunny skies and highs near 63°F. However, winds will pick up by evening as colder air moves in. By Wednesday, highs will struggle to reach 47°F, and rain is expected to develop by the afternoon. Late Wednesday night, temperatures will fall to 34°F, bringing a 50% chance of rain transitioning to snow. Gusty winds up to 30 mph could worsen travel conditions.
The snow will continue into Thursday morning, when highs will hover around 41°F. Icy spots on roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely, making commutes challenging.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture ahead of windy conditions and keep an emergency kit in vehicles. Those traveling midweek should monitor forecasts closely and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
