Birmingham, Alabama – Straight-line winds strong enough to topple trees and knock out power are expected to sweep through central Alabama overnight into Sunday morning, marking the second round of storms to hit the region in less than 24 hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a new line of storms is developing over Arkansas and will move into Alabama late Saturday night, bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph and the potential for large hail. The risk level for much of central Alabama is currently set at Level 2 (slight risk).
Cities under the highest threat include Tuscaloosa (by 1 a.m.), Birmingham (around 3 a.m.), Montgomery (by 4 a.m.), and Auburn and Eufaula (as late as 10 a.m.). Residents in Fayette, Anniston, and Selma should also remain alert for downed power lines and tree damage during these hours.
NWS urges residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and avoid travel during peak storm hours. Secure outdoor objects, charge devices, and stay indoors away from windows.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect through Sunday morning, and additional updates or warnings may follow overnight.
