Troy, NY – A jail intelligence investigation in Rensselaer County has led to the seizure of more than 50 grams of suspected illegal drugs and eight sheets of paper that tested positive for fentanyl, raising concerns about contraband inside the county's correctional facility.
According to the Rensselaer County Sheriff 's Office, investigators arrested Marcos Delgado, 23, on Thursday, Oct. 8, following an investigation conducted by the department's Jail Intelligence Unit. The sheriff's office announced the arrest Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Delgado was already incarcerated at the Rensselaer County Jail after being remanded following a court appearance in an unrelated criminal matter. Authorities said he was awaiting transfer to state prison when investigators uncovered the suspected contraband.
Fentanyl Positive Paper Among Items Seized
The Jail Intelligence Unit developed information that led officers to discover and seize more than 50 grams of suspected illicit drugs, along with eight sheets of paper that tested positive for fentanyl.
Authorities did not specify the exact substances making up the 50 plus grams or explain how the suspected contraband entered the facility.
Inmate Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Delgado was charged with third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class B felony, and first degree promoting prison contraband, a Class D felony.
He also faces second degree promoting prison contraband, a Class A misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of cannabis, a violation.
The sheriff's office said Delgado was processed without incident and transported to Troy City Court for arraignment.
Sheriff Kyle Bourgault praised corrections officers and jail intelligence personnel for their vigilance, saying their work helps protect both employees and incarcerated individuals.
Officials have not announced whether additional suspects or charges are expected.
Delgado is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
