Rhinebeck, NY – A late night brush fire in Dutchess County has led to the arrest of a 26 year old Rhinebeck man accused of setting a camera on fire, causing flames to spread to nearby vegetation along Route 9.
According to the Dutchess County Sheriff 's Office, John K. Coleman, 26, was arrested early Sunday, Oct. 11, following an investigation into a damaged Flock camera and a brush fire reported Saturday night in the Town of Rhinebeck.
Authorities said New York State Police and sheriff's deputies responded to the area of 6052 Route 9 at approximately 11:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, after receiving a report of a brush fire.
Emergency responders extinguished the flames, allowing investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators allege Coleman intentionally set fire to the camera, which subsequently caused the surrounding brush to ignite.
Following the investigation, Coleman was charged with third degree criminal mischief, a felony, and fifth degree arson, a misdemeanor.
The Sheriff's Office said Coleman was processed and released on appearance tickets. He is scheduled to return to the Town of Rhinebeck Court on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026.
The incident prompted a response involving multiple agencies, including the New York State Police, Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division and Rhinebeck Fire Department .
Authorities have not disclosed the estimated cost of the damaged camera, the extent of the surrounding vegetation damage or a possible motive behind the alleged incident.
The Sheriff's Office indicated additional information may be released as it becomes available.
Coleman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
