Marshall, NY – A dump truck driver from Rome suffered minor injuries after his vehicle overturned along State Route 12B in Oneida County on Monday afternoon, October 26, after he reportedly swerved to avoid deer in the roadway.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded to a reported personal injury motor vehicle crash at approximately 12:25 p.m. in the town of Marshall, south of Utica.
Investigators identified the driver as Michael Archer Jr., 45, of Rome, New York.
Authorities said Archer was operating a 2025 Western Star dump truck northbound on Route 12B when he encountered deer in the roadway.
While attempting to avoid a collision with the animals, Archer reportedly swerved, causing the heavy truck to overturn.
The dump truck landed on its side in a ditch along the western shoulder of Route 12B.
Despite the size of the vehicle and the rollover, Archer sustained only minor injuries, according to deputies.
Emergency medical services evaluated the driver at the scene, and he was cleared without requiring additional hospital treatment, according to the sheriff's office.
The Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance, Oriskany Falls Fire Department and Hale's Towing assisted deputies with the response.
The sheriff's office did not report any additional injuries or indicate whether other vehicles were involved.
Officials also did not specify whether the crash caused temporary lane restrictions or how long recovery operations lasted.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers drivers face when encountering wildlife on rural highways, particularly when operating large commercial vehicles.
Motorists traveling through wooded and rural areas are encouraged to remain alert for animals near roadways and avoid sudden steering maneuvers when possible.
No citations or criminal charges were announced in the sheriff's office report.
