Albany, NY – A widespread frost and freeze threat will develop across eastern New York and western New England overnight, with some colder locations dropping into the upper 20s by Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service in Albany said cold temperatures will produce areas of frost across eastern New York and western New England, including communities where the growing season remains underway. Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories cover portions of the region.
The alerts highlighted by the NWS run from midnight through 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7.
The Hudson Valley, southern Taconics and Litchfield County, Connecticut, are among the areas highlighted for frost and freeze concerns. Overnight lows across affected areas could range from the upper 20s to mid 30s , cold enough to harm sensitive vegetation and outdoor plants.
Residents with plants still outside should consider protecting them before temperatures fall overnight.
The cold follows a broader early October temperature drop affecting parts of the Northeast. The National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly is also forecasting patchy frost farther south, including portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with a Frost Advisory in effect for Sussex County, New Jersey.
These increasingly cold nights are also a reminder that the seasonal transition toward winter is underway. Farther west, a separate storm expected to affect the Rockies next week could produce accumulating snow along Colorado’s Continental Divide. The National Weather Service in Pueblo has stressed that winter weather during October is not unusual, particularly in mountain areas.
That developing Rockies system is not responsible for Wednesday morning's frost in New York and New England, nor is it currently forecast by these sources to reach the Northeast. But both situations underscore why October is a good time to prepare for colder weather before winter conditions become more frequent.
Across eastern New York and western New England, the immediate concern is Wednesday morning's frost and freeze. Temperatures should reach their lowest levels around daybreak, with the current alerts continuing through 8 a.m.
