Buffalo, New York – Wind gusts up to 60 mph could hit parts of western New York through 7 p.m. Sunday as scattered thunderstorms develop ahead of an approaching cold front, creating a risk for difficult driving and isolated wind damage.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, isolated severe thunderstorms are possible across the region, with damaging wind gusts the primary hazard. Large hail is also possible, and forecasters said a tornado cannot be ruled out. The severe risk continues through 7 p.m.
Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Rochester, Jamestown and communities along the I 90 corridor are within the broader storm risk area. Areas south and east of Buffalo are under a Level 2 of 5 severe weather risk, while locations farther north generally face a lower threat.
Thunderstorms could also produce torrential rainfall. However, the National Weather Service expects storms to keep moving, limiting the overall flood risk.
Drivers should prepare for sudden visibility reductions and strong crosswinds, particularly on exposed highways. Residents should secure outdoor furniture and other loose objects that could become airborne. Anyone who hears thunder should immediately move indoors.
The strongest severe weather threat is expected to end around 7 p.m. Sunday, but residents should keep alerts enabled in case warnings are issued as individual storms intensify.
