Buffalo, NY – Western New York could see its first frost of the fall season Monday night into early Tuesday as cooler air spreads across the region behind a cold front.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, mainly dry conditions are expected Sunday, although an isolated shower cannot be ruled out. A cold front will cross the region Sunday night, bringing a few additional showers before noticeably cooler weather arrives Monday.
The timing puts western New York into a familiar early October transition. Frost becomes increasingly common across the region during fall, though the first occurrence can vary substantially by community and year. The NWS is specifically highlighting Monday night into early Tuesday as a period when frost could develop.
Before the colder air arrives, Sunday temperatures will remain relatively mild. Highs are forecast mainly in the 60s across western and north central New York.
Sunday night lows are expected mostly in the 40s. The NWS forecast shows about 48 degrees in Buffalo and Rochester, 46 in Batavia and Dansville, 45 in Olean and Wellsville, and 43 near Clear Lake. Watertown is forecast near 47.
Monday will turn much cooler behind the front. With temperatures expected to fall further Monday night, frost could form in parts of the region by early Tuesday morning.
The NWS advises residents with sensitive plants to prepare for the colder conditions.
For now, western New York can expect a mostly dry and mild Sunday, a few showers with the front Sunday night, then a cooler Monday before the frost risk develops Monday night into Tuesday morning.
